The Hornets Are Coming!

There have been multiple news reports of the Asian giant hornets spotted in different countries around the world and their sightings are increasing. According to Aljazeera News, these hornets are “native to East Asia”1 and are considered an “invasive species”1, meaning the Asian hornets are not native to the countries they are being spotted in. But the reason these hornets are making headlines is their sting is painful and deadly. They harm humans and livestock and they can kill “insects, as well as honeybees”1 which are already decreasing in population around the world. The “Decline of bees”2 has a serious effect on crop production and food security for a nation. The world is saying this is a serious problem but what is God trying to show His people?

In the Bible ‘hornet’ is mentioned 3 times; Exodus 23:28, Deuteronomy 7:20 and Joshua 24:12. In Exodus 23:28 it says that the Lord will send hornets to drive out the nations that were in the land of Canaan. Deuteronomy 7:20 says the Lord will send the hornet among these nations until those that are left will hide themselves from the children of Israel and the children of Israel will destroy them. Joshua 24:12 says the Lord sent the hornet to drive out the nations from the land of Canaan even the two kings of the Amorites. The Lord was showing Israel He will drive out the nations (Deuteronomy 7:1) from Canaan and those that remain will be destroyed by the army of Israel.

From these biblical accounts, there are 3 points we can take away as God’s people in these last days.

  1. Christ will go before us to protect us from our enemies as we obey his voice (Exodus 23:20-22).

We are reminded in Joshua 5:13-15 that Joshua saw a man with his sword drawn and this man, Jesus, commanded Joshua to loosen his shoe because the place where he stood was holy. Joshua obeyed. As we obey the Lord He will protect us from our enemies, He will fight for us. So let’s not be afraid or discouraged by the multitude of enemies surrounding us and the things that are coming on the world (Luke 21:26). God wants us to know the battle is not ours, but the Lord’s (2 Chronicles 20:15).

  1. The chosen few are God’s special people and they will be blessed (Deuteronomy 7:6,7) as they prepare to enter the heavenly Canaan.

As we serve the Lord in these last days He will bless us. Christ will bless our bread and water and take away our sickness (Exodus 23:25, Deuteronomy 7:13-15). As we serve the Lord we are not serving ourselves, we are serving others. Looking out for the wellbeing of others is a part of our service to God. As we are blessed, we bless others by sharing the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ (John 6:48), and He also inspires us to provide for their physical needs (Proverbs 22:9, 1 John 3:17). God’s special people, though few in number, will not suffer from hunger. God will sustain His people.

  1. Don’t forget the goodness of God (Joshua 24:12). God always keeps His promises (Exodus 12:25).

The hornet is a sign of God’s judgements that are coming on this world, but it’s also a sign of God’s promise and remembrance of the good things God as done for us in the past. God wants us to always remember His goodness towards us. Many times when things in life are going good we forget God and when things are going bad in our lives we call out to God. But God wants us to remember Him always. In the good times and bad times God wants us to remember His goodness and His promises. In the Old Testament, there are many accounts of God’s people setting up altars of remembrance (Joshua 4:1-9, Exodus 17:8-16). These altars were built at places where God did powerful miracles, rescued His people or taught them an important lesson. These altars of remembrance would be a reminder to future generations of God’s faithfulness in the past and will give them strength to continue trusting the LORD in their present difficulties.

Event: Preparation For Exclusion: Prayer & Encouragement Series.

As God’s people see that we are nearing the heavenly Promised Land, we ought to be encouraged as we see signs all around us of Jesus’ soon return. Christ said in Luke 21:28, “And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh”. We are nearing our Promised Home, the Lord is preparing the way before us and wants us to stay on the path. Let us continue on the path towards heaven and say like Joshua, “but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” Joshua 24:15.
